James Taranto excerpts quotes from crank candidate Ron Paul criticizing civil rights legislation and Lincoln’s decision not to permit the slave states to break away from the Union and continue slavery. Taranto explains that for Paul ingrown libertarian ideology, and the kind of contempt for the federal government mainly identified with private-militia types, seems less important than actual liberty — even for Americans.
