Likelihood of success

What more sure sign of it can there be than the onset of massive comment spam (all caught by Akismet)? We’re surging, baby.

So how does it feel to be more popular as Ron Coleman, the person, versus Ron Coleman, the IP Attorney?

Oh, Jay, let’s not get ahead of ourselves!
On Technorati, which cannot include links to my old URL on Blogger, Likelihood of Confusion is still ranked 38,848 with 500 links from 100 blogs, including Instapundit many times!, Kausfiles, JihadWatch, Doc Searls, Don Surber, Above the Law and numerous blawgs … My server logs report 1000 unique visitors a day and I’m on quite a few classy blogrolls.
This blog — which to be fair, is less than a month old, while LOC is two years old — gets a few hundred a day, but they’re mostly riding squarely on the back of Dean’s World. If I don’t post an item directly linking to DW every day, it sinks like a stone — so these numbers are all cooked. I can’t buy a link (well, I could, but I’m not spending money on this one the way I did on LOC!) from any “major” blog yet, though a few friends (like Space Monkey at IMAO, Dawn Eden and Walter Olson at Overlawyered … interesting who did not roll out the welcome wagon, too…) have helped out. Even with those pumped up numbers, LOS is ranked 143,056 with links from 30 blogs (ignore the link count — it’s double-counting based on internal links from the WordPress “home base” URL).
I’m not complaining, but — accepted your tongue-in-cheek dichotomy — we have a long way to go. I am committed to getting there. It will help to blog better! I’m always thinking about what I can do to improve.
I’m also overwhelmed with Passover preparations — could be a month (after the holiday and the the dig-out) before I’m really firing on all cylinders. I’m trying to blog just often enough to ruin any chance of ever being confirmed by, say, the U.S. Senate for anything higher than Second Assistant Deputy Undersecretary of Agriculture.
Nieporent, incidentally, is busy with a couple of hot projects now. When he gets back to contributing I believe that will help. He has lots of enemies!

I got hammered with spam lately too. Bad Behavior stops most of it before it even gets to akismet.

Fitch, you’re saying I should kill and then dig it up and make it dead, too?

Bad Behavior blocks spam BEFORE it posts, thus reducing the amount of spam in the Akismet queue to sort through to find false positives. (I had a false positive just today. It always thinks Basil’s Blog trackbacks are spam for some reason, as well as flagging comments from one of our own ADMINISTRATORS for crying out loud.) It usually blocks at least 2/3 of the spam before it gets posted.
I like the killing it after it’s dead and buried idea too.

But Fitch, that’s what Akismet does for WordPress.
